Brevard and Indian River Schools that Deserve an "A" rating

As usual, public schools expend plenty of energy congratulating themselves for mediocre performance. Too many schools in Florida have been given an "A" rating despite dismal student test scores. Want proof? One Brevard school was given an "A" in 2009 with the following results:

38% of its students met high standards in science, 77% met high standards in reading and 81% met high standards in math. Despite this, the education bureaucracy declared victory and awarded this school an "A." If this is an "A" school, I'd hate to see a "C" school.

Obviously, those are not "A" grades. The appropriate letter grades for such performance are a "B" in math, "C" in reading, and an "F" in science. Why didn't you know about this? Because the Department of Education buried the information in a spreadsheet rather than acknowledging the problem. This is your government in action, Florida. If you want the law changed, you need to contact your state representative and demand a set of letter grade standards for school performance that reflects reality.

Here are the REAL "A" schools of Brevard and Indian River County, Florida, according to a stricter set of standards.

To make the list, a school's overall average of students meeting high standards across ALL subjects had to be at least 85%. Then, any school whose students scored less than 70% meeting high standards in any ONE subject was eliminated. Here is the list, in descending order by the percentage of students meeting high standards averaged across all four tested subjects: reading, math, writing and science. If a school isn't on the list, then it didn't make the cut and you should choose a better school. These results are from testing conducted in 2009.

I urge you to do whatever it takes to get your child into a top performing school. You only have one chance to get this right.

Note: All schools are in Brevard County unless indicated with (Ind Riv).
